Sohini S Mohanty (Girls U12 tennis champion) was unveiled as the brand ambassador of Aahawahan Foundation at an event in Bhubaneswar on 04.07.2019. In May 2019, she bagged the girls U-12 singles title in the MSLTA - Yonex Sunrise MSTA Super Series Under 12 Tennis Tournament which concluded at MSLTA, Mumbai on Friday. Her All India ranking is four.
Ever since she started playing, she has displayed a fearless approach to tennis, combining the charm of innocence with a passion for winning. Her motto has always been “I am always a fighter and because of that, I don’t fear anybody. I know if I fight, I will win.”
According to her coach and experts following the sport pan India, Sohini S Mohanty is enormously talented. She has won around 20 All India Tennis Association (AITA) titles since she started playing tournaments in 2017. In fact, she is extremely versatile. She not only plays tennis but also the drums and the piano. She is also good at studies.
Her fascination for the sport drives her to train for four hours on an average every evening. On holidays, she trains in the morning as well. The 10-year-old’s achievements are significant since she has won all 20 titles, 13 singles and seven doubles in the under-12 and under-14 segments, all above her age group. As a child, she was moved by the plight for the poor and was determined to work along with like-minded stakeholders to improve their circumstances. At such a young age, she realised that social work activity is about supporting individuals, families, and communities to have greater control over their lives and fulfil their potential as humans. Outstanding social workers could assist silenced populations to be heard for the first time. Her career in tennis was rising, but her journey in social work had also begun.
Aahawahan Foundation works for the welfare of the underprivileged in rural areas. Community development is at the heart of all our efforts. Aahawahan Foundation is rooted in the belief that all individuals should have access to quality health, well being, sanitation, employment, wealth, justice, and opportunity. We strongly believe in the overall holistic approach to development. In other words, our socio-economic initiatives cover an entire village, group or area. Through sustained long-term initiatives, we transform the economic health of the specific community.
Socio-economic growth has a tremendous positive impact on the well being of the rural population. We are actively involved in employment generation by mapping the skill level of human resources. We try to place individuals with a sound educational background in jobs matching their expertise while those without sufficient qualification are placed in a reskilling program. By upgrading their skills, we improve their employment opportunities. Our primary focus is on empowering women by supporting their economic independence. For e.g., we are promoting cottage industry (agarbathi/pickle production) in rural areas. This provides an opportunity for women to contribute to the families income.
Recently, the NGO has been recognized and appreciated by various stakeholders and community members in Orissa for excellent relief work for Cyclone Fani. The NGO has raised around 30% of the projected amount within a few days and is providing cooked & packed food in the affected areas.
Sohini S Mohanty has been following Aahawahan Foundation’s social work over a period of time and was impressed by the NGO’s proactive effort in providing relief for Cyclone Fani. She had always wanted to build a partnership with a value based NGO and was convinced Aahawahan Foundation was the right fit. During the event, she expressed her support to all the noble causes being backed by the NGO. Sohini S Mohanty also addressed the members of the media and audiences present at the event. She spoke about how she was inspired by social issues, especially women’s empowerment from a young age. The leadership team of Aahawahan Foundation believes through this partnership “The seeds of change have been sown to harvest the benefits of social transformation in future.”
