Assam is reeling under the impact of severe floods. The government in Assam has issued a red alert as the situation worsens by the day. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced. Entire portions of the state have been isolated.
Upper Assam has been cut off. More than 15 people have died. Overall 42.87 lakh people in 4,157 Assam villages have been affected by the floods which have submerged more than 1,53,211 hectares of farmland in 30 districts. In the state capital, Guwahati, water is flowing above the danger level. Nearly 83,000 people evacuated from flood-affected areas have been provided shelter in 183 relief camps spread across the state. There are also reports of medical issues arising due to the situation. These are just not statistics. Numbers to be interpreted. They are an indicator of the grim reality at present in Assam, even as the weather forecast is for more rain in the coming days.
Relief measures are being undertaken. A collaborative approach from various stakeholders is the need of the hour. Aahwahan Foundation was amongst the first NGO’s to hit the ground hard and contribute to the relief work. We shall leave no stone unturned to help in rescue and rehabilitation initiatives. Assam’s path to rehabilitation and reconstruction is going to be long and hard. The magnitude of the problem is overwhelming.
Aahwahan Foundation would continue to serve the people of Assam and stand by them in this hour of crisis. We are always willing to collaborate with stakeholders at the regional, state and national level to scale up the relief initiatives.
